What will we learn this year
Reading
There are many parts to the reading block that your child will experience this year in first grade.
Shared Reading: A time where we gather around a big book and learn together about strategies, words, and reading concepts.
Word Study: A time were we learn about how words work, phonics, sight words, and word families.
Reading Mini Lesson: A time where students learn about reading comprehension strategies, more about different book genres, along with other concepts that will help them grow as a reader.
Guided Reading: A time where students work in a small group with the teacher at their individual reading level to help become a stronger reader.
Writing
In writing, we will spend time working on a variety of pieces each quarter. We learn how to write in the narrative genre, the informative genre, and the argumentative genre. Along with learning about different types of writing we learn the basics of writing such as, capitals, punctuation, finger spacing, creating a sentence, adding details, etc.

Math is such a fun area in first grade. We spend time building on the foundations students learned in kindergarten as well as going deeper with concepts and skills.
